If you’re like many breastfeeding mamas (or mamas-to-be), you may be intrigued by the idea of a wearable breast pump. The latest generation of pumps has a lot to offer busy moms.
As with any purchase, you want to do your homework before diving in. We get it!
Here are 7 common questions—with answers—to cover all you need to know about wearable breast pumps.
1. Wearable vs. traditional breast pumps – what’s the difference?
A wearable breast pump like the Lansinoh Wearable Pump touts several benefits over a traditional pump:
- It’s completely hands-free. Some wearable pumps still have tubes and a separate pump hub that needs to be clipped to you. Look for one like the new Lansinoh Wearable Breast Pump – discreet, portable pumping cups and no cords, tubes, or wires means you’re free to move about your day while pumping. You won’t exactly be doing cartwheels—but with a wearable pump, you can walk around, make a meal, tend to your little one, and more. And we know multitasking is everything!
- You’ve got the power. With a wearable pump, you don’t need to worry about staying close to an outlet or other power source. Instead, you can rely on its long-lasting rechargeable battery.
- It’s lightweight and compact. Our wearable pump is small enough to fit inside your regular bra or nursing bra—no special pumping bra required. It’s easy to carry around, too, making pumping on the go a breeze.
- It’s more discreet. When using the Lansinoh Wearable Pump you won’t need to remove or change your clothes (aka no special pumping bras required). Many mamas feel more comfortable pumping in public with a wearable pump.
- Pumping is easier and more convenient. As a new mom, you need to fit pumping into your busy life, not the other way around. The flexibility of a wearable breast pump may even make you more likely to pump.
It’s easy to see why wearable breast pumps have become a game-changer for so many mamas!
2. How do I use a wearable breast pump?
With the Lansinoh Wearable Pump, we are all about stress-free cleaning and assembly. Simply assemble the cup, insert the flange, and attach the hub. Then slip it into your regular bra, center your nipple within the flange tunnel, and you’re ready to pump! We recommend wearing a full-coverage, tight-fitting bra to help your wearable pump stay put.
The Lansinoh Wearable Pump is controlled with easy-to-reach buttons on the top of each unit. As you pump, your breastmilk is collected in the click-tight collection cups, which hold up to 8 oz. each.
When your pumping sesh is over, simply transfer that precious liquid gold into a bottle or breastmilk storage bag. The easy pour spout ensures you won’t lose a single drop.
3. Will a wearable breast pump fit my large breasts? How about small breasts?
Our wearable pump comes with 4 sizes of flanges (21mm, 25mm, 28mm, and 30.5mm), so you can find the right one for you.
Remember, it’s your nipple size that matters here, not the size of your breasts or areolas (the darker skin surrounding your nipple). Hold the flange up to your chest, center it on each of your nipples, and see how it feels. If your nipple fits comfortably in the flange, this is a good fit to get started.
If your nipples hurt during or after pumping, or if your breasts don’t feel well drained of milk, you might need a different flange size. (This is true with any breast pump.) Learn more about finding the right-sized flange.
4. Do wearable breast pumps actually work?
Yes! We designed the Lansinoh Wearable Pump to work as hard as you do.
Like all our electric breast pumps, it comes with 3 pumping styles to mimic baby’s natural feeding patterns and 2-phase technology to stimulate let-down and expression. A lot of moms are worried a wearable pump means sacrificing suction strength, but we don’t think you should have to compromise. With the Lansinoh Wearable Pump, you can adjust the 8 levels of hospital strength suction to maximize your milk flow. Learn more about the science behind our wearable pump.
5. How do I clean a wearable pump?
As with any breast pump, you’ll want to sanitize your wearable pump before first use. (And don’t forget to charge it!)
Rinse the pump parts (not the pump hub) with cold water immediately after each use. We recommend hand-washing them or running them through the dishwasher at least every few days. Use warm, soapy water and place the parts in a separate wash basin dedicated to infant feeding items. Putting pump parts and baby bottles directly in the sink exposes them to lurking germs (yuck!). Allow the parts to fully air-dry on a clean, unused dish towel or paper towel.
Perhaps the best part: The Lansinoh Wearable Pump has only 5 pieces to assemble and clean, which is a total timesaver! Learn more about cleaning your wearable breast pump.
6. Are wearable breast pumps covered by insurance?
It depends. Many insurance plans and durable medical equipment providers (DMEs) will allow you to pay a little extra and get the wearable pump of your choice. The fees and choices may vary depending on your plan.
7. Is a wearable breast pump right for me?
A wearable pump can be a great choice for pumping mamas who want extra freedom and flexibility.
When it comes to pumping, we’re big believers that you shouldn’t have to compromise. Your pump should work for you, with the comfort, strength, and convenience you need in those early days of parenthood.
